People with learning disabilities can get extra support when visiting the doctor
Do you work with or care for someone with a learning disability? You may not know that people with learning disabilities often have poorer physical and mental health compared to others, and even lower life expectancies, so keeping a close eye on their health is very important.
Going to the doctor is not always easy when you have a learning disability. However, anyone of any age with any level of disability can join the Learning Disability Register and access additional support.
Individuals on their GP’s learning disability register can access extra help, including:
As well as helping to detect illnesses and conditions, a GP can produce a Summary Care Record as part of the Annual Health Check. This summary of a person’s medical records (with their permission) allows health care staff to get a better idea of their needs when being treated away from their usual doctor’s surgery. This can help speed up care and ensure the right medicines and treatments are administered.
If you or someone you care for would benefit from being on the register, NHS England has teamed up with Mencap to produce two videos and a series of guides called Don’t Miss Out. These guides highlight the benefits of being on the Learning Disability Register and provide more information on how to sign up.
Hampshire County Council’s Trading Standards Service would like to bring residents’ attention to some suspicious telephone calls that have been highlighted to them recently:
Trading Standards urge any residents receiving such calls not to respond, or to give out any personal information to unknown persons over the telephone.
Suspicions are that the callers may be trying to sell home security devices, such as burglar alarms, and may make exaggerated claims about their effectiveness.
Any persons affected by debt can seek advice though their local Citizens Advice. Details of how to find a local Citizens Advice can be found on Citizens Advice Website
For advice on scams, to report a matter to Trading Standards, or for a’ Buy With Confidence’ directory of traders approved by Trading Standards, contact our partners at the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 03454 04 05 06.
Any persons affected by this, or any other scam can also report the matter to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040 or visiting www.actionfraud.police.uk
